Driving Under the Influence Statistics and Facts Drugs other than alcohol (i.e. marijuana and cocaine) are involved in about 18% of motor vehicle driver deaths. These other drugs are generally used in combination with alcohol. (Jones) Each year, alcohol-related crashes in the United States cost about $51 billion. (Blincoe) Drinking and Driving kills more than 18,000 Americans each and every year. Suicide kills more than 32,000 Americans each year. BOTH suicide and drinking and driving can be prevented. We have partnered with a new website that was designed to help with suicide information, education, awareness, and prevention. Together through knowledge and support, we can save lives. Male drivers involved in fatal motor vehicle crashes are almost twice as likely as female drivers to be intoxicated with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08% or greater. (NHTSA) It is illegal to drive with a BAC of 0.08% or higher in all 50 states, DC, and Puerto Rico. Young men ages 18-20 (under the legal drinking age) reported driving while impaired more frequently than any other age group. (Shults/Quinlan) About three in every ten Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related crash at some time in their lives. (MADD)
