Leyritz charged following accident that killed 30-year-old woman

Former Major League Baseball player Jim Leyritz was arrested on charges of driving under the influence and killing another driver after his vehicle crashed into hers.

Leyritz faces charges of DUI manslaughter and DUI property damage, said Detective Kathy Collins, Fort Lauderdale police spokeswoman.

Police believe alcohol was involved in the crash, though investigators are awaiting results of blood alcohol tests, Collins said.

Fort Lauderdale authorities got a call at 3:20 a.m. that a crash had occurred in the city's entertainment district, Collins said.

She said Leyritz was driving a 2006 Ford Expedition when he collided at an intersection with 30-year-old female of Plantation, who was driving a 2000 Mitsubishi Montero.

The female was ejected from the car, police said. She died at Broward General Medical Center, Collins said.

Witnesses told police Leyritz had a red light. Officers on the scene observed Leyritz to have red, watery eyes, a flushed face and an odor of alcohol, police said.

Leyritz was told the female had died and he was asked to submit to a blood test, police said.

"After he refused, Leyritz was informed that blood would be taken above his refusal," the police statement said.

On Sunday, Leyritz's attorney, Jeffrey M. Ostrow, released the following statement.

"Due to the tragic and unfortunate events of December 28, 2007, Mr. Leyritz and his family wish to express their deepest sympathies and condolences to the victim's family."

BRANDON – Hillsborough County deputies say a man on a motorcycle was killed in a crash on Tuesday night, and the driver responsible is facing charges of driving under the influence.

Investigators say 24-year-old Joshua Motsinger of Gibsonton was riding his motorcycle in Brandon when he was hit by a truck.  They say he was turning left onto Providence Road from State Road 60 when it happened just before 10:00 p.m.

According to deputies, 42-year-old Jeffrey Freson of Deltona was behind the wheel of the truck that hit Motsinger.  They say Freson wasn't paying attention when he made a u-turn at the intersection, and Motsinger—who had a green light—hit the side of Freson's Ford F-150 pickup.

Motsinger was taken to Tampa General Hospital with critical injuries, but he later died.

Deputies say Freson showed signs of intoxication, and he was arrested at the scene.  He was taken to the Hillsborough County Jail, and he has been charged with DUI manslaughter.
